1000 | SoftTIE Straps

Ski straps might seem like a small accessory, but for many skiers they’re an essential tool on and off the mountain. We sat down to talk about why these simple pieces of gear are so useful, and what makes them worth rethinking from a sustainability perspective.

Why ski straps?

We wanted to make ski straps because they’re incredibly useful in so many different scenarios as a skier. Every team rider at 1000 carries a couple of them at all times in their backpacks, so it felt natural to make a 1000 strap of our own. Up until now, we mostly had big and expensive products on the website, and we wanted to offer something more affordable, something everyone could get their hands on.

Why SoftTIE?

When we decided to make ski straps, we did a deep dive into all the different brands out there. SoftTIE immediately stood out as the clear choice. Not only are they sustainable, their quality is also off the charts. The fixing strap itself is highly elastic and extremely tear-resistant, it can stretch up to 4 times its length before breaking. It has a compact design for maximum space savings. The lock is ultra durable, impact-resistant and is built with matrix-reinforced plastic for securing maximum loads, all the way up to 1000N. The lock system could not be easier, attach it in seconds and remove it just as quickly. It has rounded edges for smooth handling and holds securely even on smooth surfaces, it’s easy to use with gloves or mittens. It’s UV-resistant and weatherproof, making it suitable for permanent outdoor use and it operates from -20°C up to +75°C. And last but surely not least, it’s reusable, adjustable, and you can combine multiple straps for extra length.

How do you use them?

There are endless ways to use ski straps, and that’s what makes them great. The most obvious is when you’re carrying skis and poles, you just strap them together into one neat package so you’re not juggling four loose pieces. They’re also super handy for storage, keeping your skis together in the garage, with or without poles. And they’re essential when you’re out hiking. When you carry skis on each side of your backpack, you want to create an “A-frame”. If you strap the noses of the skis together with a ski strap, it keeps them in place and prevents your heels from hitting the skis’ tail while you’re hiking uphill. A quote from team rider Magnus : “I use them constantly outside of skiing too, I’ve strapped skis onto my bike, bundled poles and boots, and they’re amazing for filming setups. I’ve used them to secure a camera to a tripod or keep a GoPro stick in place. Honestly, I always keep a few in my backpack or gear bag because you never know when they’ll come in handy”.

Are they sustainable?

Our sustainability team did a deep dive evaluating the sustainability of all the Ski Straps on the market, and there was one brand that clearly stood out, it was SoftTIE. It’s the only ski strap company in the world producing their straps using renewable energy. It was our easiest choice yet, because there was no other option : 100% renewable energy in the production process, traceable raw materials and developed and manufactured in Austria. SoftTIE straps are made to handle snow, ice, and sunshine. Still, a little care keeps them around even longer. Rinse off dirt, salt, or sand after heavy use, dry them before long-term storage, store out of direct sunlight when not in use to protect elasticity and check the EasyLock system now and then to keep it clean and smooth. Built tough, made to last, and easy to care for, so you can keep skiing without worry. For us, that made the choice clear: if we were going to make a 1000 strap, it had to be with the most responsible and future-focused partner available.
