Walkthrough: the black kit, detail by detail

The collab kit we made with Haglöfs looks relaxed. Wide legs, a short and boxy jacket, nothing that screams mountaineering gear. But almost every detail on it is there because one of us got annoyed by something on the mountain, and the Haglöfs team found a way to fix it. This is a walkthrough of the black kit that drops 28 October, and how each part ended up on it.

The fit

The bib has wide legs and articulated knees, but it's cut to fit the body you actually have. The jacket has a great short and boxy fit so it looks good while skiing but also when it's just raining in town. Both are unisex, in sizes S to XL.

Madeleine Axelsson, Head of Product Development at Haglöfs, picks the silhouette as the detail she's most proud of. "It was the starting point for the whole project, and I think we managed to capture exactly what 1000skis had in mind while keeping the function you expect from Haglöfs."

Eva Weiss, Head of Design at Haglöfs, remembers why it mattered so much to us. "I'll never forget something Pär said during one of our discussions. He explained that he wants to wear the same style whether he's surfing, walking around town or skiing." That's still true. I don't want to look like a different person when I clip into my skis.

The bib

The suspenders took longer than anything else on the bib. "We wanted them adjustable for people of different heights while still looking good, without long, loose ends hanging down," says Madeleine.

They're long for a second reason too. We like our pants baggy and low, and I used to sew extra-long suspenders onto my bibs to get them there. Some friends of ours even started a whole company making extra-long suspenders for the same reason. On this bib they're elastic and adjust far enough to wear it however you like. At one of the fittings we put on a backpack and found the plastic buckle sitting right under the shoulder strap, so the suspenders were redesigned again.

The legs

Two Velcro straps sit at the back of each lower leg. Tighten them and the leg wraps snug around your boot and shin, so you can walk in crampons without catching the fabric. Open them again for the ski down and the full wide leg is back. They're just as handy in the parking lot. Tighten them when you swap your ski boots for shoes and you won't be stepping on your pant legs.

Franziska Knitsch, designer at Haglöfs, put these at the top of her list. "Whether it's the bib adjustment or the Velcro at the bottom of the bib, these small details make a big difference."

Transceiver hooks

There are transceiver hooks in three places. Wear the jacket or not, keep your phone left or right, there's always a spot that keeps your transceiver away from your phone.

"Not silly, but maybe a bit unusual: all the transceiver attachment points. It makes total sense, though. Everyone is different and prefers to attach their transceiver in a different place," says Madeleine.

The loops are red, which was Haglöfs' idea and Eva's favourite part. "They're highlighted in red so you can immediately find them when you need them."

The jacket

The hand pockets sit high on the jacket. Put something heavy in them and the jacket keeps the wide, boxy fit we were after instead of getting pulled down. They're also angled so you can get your hands in with a backpack on. Inside the jacket there are two big mesh drop pockets. We call them skin pockets, since that's where your climbing skins go between laps.

The fabric

Both pieces are made from Proof, a three-layer fabric from Haglöfs. It's rated at 20,000 mm waterproof, up from 15,000 mm on the grey kit, and 20,000 g/m²/24h breathable, which is how much moisture can pass out through a square metre of fabric in a day. Put simply, the rain stays out and the sweat from skinning uphill gets out.

Franziska sums up what we were going for. "I love that the whole outfit gives skiers the freedom to adjust the fit and express their own style, however they want to wear it."

The black kit drops 28 October.

1000 | Haglöfs 2 - The Story

It started with a pair of old snow pants. The first prototype of our Haglöfs kit was sewn by Magnus. He took a pair of snow pants he'd had for years, sat down in the sewing room at the Haglöfs office in Stockholm and started taking them apart.

New warehouses on both sides of the Atlantic

We've started a US company, 1000skis inc., with a warehouse in Salt Lake City. Customers in the US now get everything shipped from inside the country. If you're outside the US, nothing changes in how you shop with us. You order from the International store, same as always. What happens after you hit buy just got a lot better, though.

How a Ski Is Made

Every pair of 1000skis is built by hand at Åre Ski Factory, a small ski factory in the mountains of northern Sweden, a short walk from the lifts of Åre, the country's biggest ski resort. A crew of skiers has been building skis and snowboards there since 1981. We've built every pair of 1000skis there since the company started in 2021, and we've learned more about skis from them than from anywhere else.

Magnus Granér | Founder interview

We Made a Podcast. Sort Of. Half the company is in Biarritz right now. The official reason is work. The real reason is that the Atlantic has waves in September and the Alps do not have snow yet. So we put two chairs on a balcony, a camera in front of them, clipped a mic on Magnus and pressed record.

Five Years. Still Red.

Five years ago today, 1000 went live. A website, three red skis, and six people refreshing the page to see if anyone would actually buy a pair. But it didn't start there. It started with a phone call I'd been dying to make.
