How a Ski Is Made

Every pair of 1000skis is built by hand at Åre Ski Factory, a small ski factory in the mountains of northern Sweden, a short walk from the lifts of Åre, the country's biggest ski resort. A crew of skiers has been building skis and snowboards there since 1981. We've built every pair of 1000skis there since the company started in 2021, and we've learned more about skis from them than from anywhere else.

‍What you'll see

About nineteen separate pieces go into a pair. Poplar and beech wood for the core, machined to a flex profile that's different for every model. Pre-preg fibreglass that lives in a fridge, because the epoxy is already in it, spread evenly through the fibres by machine, and it would start curing on the shelf. Sidewalls, base, edges, topsheet. All of it laid into a mould by hand, in the right order, by someone who has done it thousands of times and still checks every layer. Then twenty minutes in the press, and a stack of parts comes out as one ski.

Why Sweden

Most skis are built a long way from the people who sell them. Ours are built a train ride from the office, by people we know by name, in a factory that runs on renewable electricity and reuses the heat from its own presses to warm the building. Those two things matter more than most of what gets printed on a topsheet.

Why red

There's no graphic on a pair of 1000skis, and that's a decision, not a shortcut. A ski built this carefully should last years, and the main reason skis don't is that next season's graphics make this season's look old. So we designed ours to look the same in five years as they do today, and put all the effort into what's underneath the topsheet instead.

Watch the film. Next time you click into a pair, you'll know exactly what's under your feet.

KEEP THE CULTURE MOVING.

Magnus Granér | Founder interview

We Made a Podcast. Sort Of. Half the company is in Biarritz right now. The official reason is work. The real reason is that the Atlantic has waves in September and the Alps do not have snow yet. So we put two chairs on a balcony, a camera in front of them, clipped a mic on Magnus and pressed record.

Five Years. Still Red.

Five years ago today, 1000 went live. A website, three red skis, and six people refreshing the page to see if anyone would actually buy a pair. But it didn't start there. It started with a phone call I'd been dying to make.

Sustainable Travel and Mountain Access

At 1000, the mountains are the reason we exist. The snow, the landscapes, and the communities surrounding them shape everything from our design process to our values and, importantly, the way we travel.

Shipping Smarter: Ocean Freight Shrinks Our Carbon Footprint

Switching from flying individual orders to shipping bulk batches by boat has cut our emissions by about 94%. The exact numbers are estimates, but the difference is clear, slower shipping means a lighter footprint. It’s a change that keeps our skis moving forward, with far less impact on the planet.

Why we do collabs

We only create collaborations we genuinely stand behind, projects with brands we truly believe in. That shared passion leads to products built with care and intention. That’s the only thing that feels right for us.
